Fairtrade - Malawi Fashion Event

Fairtrade 3Young designer Samantha McEwen came into Clydeview Academy for a one off tutorial with some of our pupils. Samantha, aged 25 has her own label ‘Isolated Heroes’ and recently won ‘Independent Online Retailer of the Year’ at the Herald Fashion Awards. In the run up to the Fairtrade/Malawi/ Eco Fashion Event lots of clothes had been donated by both staff and pupils. The bright idea came during one meeting, to up-cycle some of the clothes to show on the night.

Samantha and her assistant offered their services to hold a tutorial with any pupils who are interested in fashion. Our inspiring young designers were Zoe Bennet, Alex Campbell, Nyah Gillan, Subashni Mohanarajah, Jenna Anderson, Amy Darrah and Cara Stevenson . Within the 2 hour tutorial the girls had up-cycled a range of outfits to exhibit on the catwalk at Clydeview Academy’s Fairtrade/ Malawi Fashion show and shopping event. The pupils used lots of donated clothes, along with African material provided by the young designer. Sequins, wool and a lot of mutil-coloured faux fur were thrown into the mix to create the awesome pieces. A big thank you had to be given to the Home Economics department for lending their sewing machines and space! The end results were amazing and definitely added a little edge to our event!
